It’s time for a mermaid life lesson!
So many of us feel like our mission in life is to DO something. Maybe it’s our puritan cultural heritage telling us that we have to suffer to clear away our sins or something, but a lot of us (me included) spend a lot of our lives trying to figure out what we should do with our lives, and how that thing has to be worthy and valuable and will give ourselves meaning and purpose… and value.
We have to do something to make our lives valuable.
But is that actually true? Or is it useful?
Let’s look at this through mermaid eyes-
Every moment of every day, life is giving to you the most delicious gift – itself.
You get given the magic of living every day. It’s weird and freaky and beautiful here on earth.
It’s sensory smorgasboard, living on this planet – and even though the world is intense and crazy we are still genuinely among the luckiest folk who have ever been.
Being alive is a gift. The Universe is always giving us more gifts: new experiences, interesting smells, things to feel, stuff to learn and get curious about.
And there is always something beautiful and delightful.
What’s the thing that makes gift-givers happier than ever?
People enjoying, using and loving their gifts.
Luxuriating in the loveliness of being alive is the greatest respect, honour and joy you can give to the Universe – fully receiving what is being gifted to you.
Really there is nothing you need to prove or do or make happen to earn the right to enjoy being alive. You just get it – the gifts keep coming. You are already here, so obviously you are worthy.
There is this concept in classical Indian dance called the Rasa. This is the fragrance of the divine that all acts of beauty attuned with the divine just exude effortlessly – any true work of art will release this Rasa.
However fragrance on it’s own is incomplete without someone to adore and luxuriate in it.
We need the Rasika – the nectar-drinker, the one who smells and drinks in the heavenly scents of the divine – for the circle to be complete.
The art has to be received.
Without it being received, it is incomplete.
What if life was the same?
What if the art of living wasn’t in doing or making something of yourself, but just receiving and relishing and enjoying being alive?
What if the universe needed these folks who weren’t concerned about making a name for themselves or doing something worthy, but were interested in really enjoying the smell of cardamom pods, or focused their lives on reading lovely novels wrapped up in blankets, or who lived to enjoy the autumn leaves and saying hello to every dog they meet?
What if you were the Rasika of life, here to receive the fragrance of the divine?
What if that was enough?
(This is a true mermaid life lesson! Mermaids are all about receiving the magic of life.)
You don’t have to achieve anything to be worthy of this. You don’t have to prove yourself, or push yourself, or make a difference, or make an impact or do something – you can simply receive the loveliness of being alive, because you can.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot as I get older and wiser. When I was in my 20’s my dreams were so ambitious partly because I wanted to prove my worth – I needed to be something important in the world because then I would know I was good enough and worthy. The fuel behind them was that lack and neediness – it wasn’t just love of the goal, it was that I needed to become something other than “just me” because me on my own was not enough.
Nowadays I get a lot out of the little things – the smell of cardamom, how awesome a particular leaf is, knowing where Jupiter is in the sky – and the needy fear behind my old goals is less ferocious.
Maybe it’s because I’ve realised that being a normal person just enjoying life is pretty sweet.
Being the Rasika of life is a very worthy goal indeed.
This post is inspired by my prayers and connections with the Mermaids: I tuned in with them to see what they wanted people to know… and they wanted you to know that you don’t have to “achieve” anything, you get to just enjoy your life!
