art on fridaysHey! Welcome to another Art on Fridays, this featuring my mermaid tarot drawings, cos that’s what I am working on this week.

mermaid tarot cards high priestess in progressI’m doing this awesome High Priestess commission for a lovely lady – do forgive the terrible indoor lighting. This is my first High Priestess tarot card – I would have thought it’d be mad popular, but no, not yet. The lady in question created her own oracle deck, so the priestess’s hidden wisdom is on the other side of those cards you see there. The jellyfishness around her head is a veil – not decided if I will keep it or not, as it’s going to be tough to create in pen. Doesn’t she make an fabulous priestess?

The thing I love MOST about this card (other than the fact that her face is gorgeous and her smile is knowing and her hair is amazing) is that she is a tattooed mermaid! Tattooed mermaids are my ultimate favourite kind of mermaids to draw in the universe ever. If I paint up a mermaid picture for fun she is always, always tattooed and decorated. Mermaids are all about beauty and self expression, so it follows that they’d love tattoos too.

Tattooed mermaids of the world! Buy a mermaid tarot card so I can draw you and your beautiful ink!

As an aside, I have been thinking a lot about Tarot today. I was tired so I popped into the local bookshop for a browse/nap and saw Doreen Virtue has a book about her Tarot Cards out. I speed read bits of the introduction, and something she was really focused on when making her oracle decks and her new tarot deck was taking the fear cards out of Tarot – that’s why she started creating Oracle decks. Before then, she was using the Major Arcana of a regular tarot deck minus any scary cards to help her in for her angel readings.

Whatever works for Doreen I guess.

I feel that the challenging cards in the deck are really, really important, and I get frustrated with decks I own that don’t have a lot of challenging cards in them. I feel like without the “darker” cards the deck can’t paint a full story because, I don’t know about your life, but sometimes my life has a LOT of the 8 of Swords in it.

I feel tarot is a mirror and since life really isn’t all unicorns and fairies, even for the people who make a living out of unicorns and fairies, it needs the ammo to show the shittier aspects of life too.

Like Kerridwen says, beneath the darkness is a spark of gold.

I guess that’s why I am a Goddess person, because in Goddess spirituality and Witchcraft you can’t hide from the challenges and the things that scare you. (Honestly, Goddess tends to shove it in your face so you can deal with it and move on.)
