how-can-mermaids-help-meI’ve been a-pondering the nature of mermaids a lot of late. As someone who is all mermaids, all the time, I often get asked, how can mermaids help me?

Or, I’m a mermaid person, how can I get in touch with my power and make stuff happen?

People who identify strongly with mermaids are usually possess particular mermaidenly qualities. I call them mermaid people, or mermaids for short.

We have this stereotype of mermaids as slightly self-obsessed women who are emotionally vulnerable and a little detached from reality. Totally not true.

Mermaid people are changeable, passionate, emotional. We have headstrong, powerful, go-getting personalities hidden underneath years of being conditioned to ignore our power. A lot of mermaid work is uncovering that powerful beauty.

Mermaids are also characterised by their changeability, their go-with-the-flowness, and by their connection to the feeling, always flowing qualities of water.

I’m a really grounded, productive mermaid. I speak to a lot of mermaid peeps and they always ask,

“How are you so productive? How do you do so make so much happen? I’m a mermaid person too and myfloaty, go-with-the-river-flow mermaid nature finds it so hard to stay on an idea and make it happen.”

And I get it.

My whole RAAAAGGGH MAKE IT HAPPEN! side of me is a bit intense, and it’s not what you usually think of when you think “mermaid”.

This weird mermaid side of me is intensely active, super grounded and business minded, so practiced at pulling ideas out of the ether and grounding them in reality. It’s a different side of the mermaid archetype than we are used to.

(I explain that at my Aries Sun and my Capricorn Clubhouse of planets (like, 3 of them?) are all chillin’ in Capricorn, the CEO of the Zodiac. We are playing with Astrology this week in the Mermaid Sisterhood on Facebook, do come and join us!)

I feel that being empowered and making shit happen is a central aspect of the Mermaid Archetype. (Empowered just means standing in your own power.) Mermaids are Sovereign beings, Queens of their inner and outer landscape, simply because they are wildly feminine and won’t give their power away to anyone. They need to be grounded and in touch with reality to hold that power.

(I find it hard to imagine a space cadet, with her head in the clouds communing with the mermaids all the time, being an effective Mermaid Queen. She gotta grow her mermaid realness first.)

The point of mermaid spirituality is that it is practical, it is earthy, it is connected to the real world we live in. Mermaids are, after all, elementals: they are a part of the fabric of this world. Water is a solid, tangible thing, so while mermaids may be fluid and changeable and sparkly and wonderful, they are still very tangible earthed in the real world.

Mermaid spirituality is not an escape. It’s an embrace of reality, a shifting of the perspective around that reality, and stepping into your sovereign power with one foot in the light, one foot in the shadow.

#MermaidRealness, y’all!

(Astrology aside: I had a fab reading recently and we were talking about Neptune, the planet named after the Roman God of Water, and how Neptune energy can either take people high and spacey, opting out of dealing with the messiness of incarnation, or it can take us to explore our shadow and get deep in the stormy waters of what’s goin’ on. Fascinating. Ahem.)

So back on the getting stuff done theme. How can mermaids help me?

I think people get different lessons from immersing in mermaid spirituality – different part of their mermaid selves that they need to reclaim, a different flavour of mermaid medicine.

Some mermaid peeps need to get out the mermaid mirror and work on Clarity. It’s hard to be a mermaid who gets stuff done if you are not even sure of what you WANT to get done, or why you haven’t done it yet, or where you are going.

Mermaids are like water, always flowing somewhere, be it a river, a stream, or an ocean current – you just have to figure out what the direction is. Sometimes it’s hard to understand which direction you are going, which current is carrying you. Sometimes you are just way, way out at sea and you’ve got no shore for reference and it’s impossibly hard to figure out exactly what direction you are floating in, or what current you are riding.

The mirror work for this is getting to know yourself REALLY well. That’s part of what mirror work is – really looking at what is there. Journalling helps. Giving yourself free time to play with helps. Listening to your feelings, noticing your opinions, allowing yourself to speak your truth, allowing your desires. This all helps.

Some mermaid peeps need to connect with the power of the mermaids so that their fearlessness and free spirit rubs off on them. Mermaids are Free, and what is the pure description of being free? Being fearless. Some mermaid peeps have got the clarity down, but they just are not seeing themselves as the fearless, powerful, badass mermaid they need to be to courageous on their journeys. They can only see themselves as afraid, worried humans instead.

Sometimes it’s just a case of really immersing in your badass fearless mermaidness to give you the courage to get moving and turn your life into alignment. That’s what I needed when I started working with mermaids. I needed a really HUGE burst of badass mermaid courage to get me to honour myself, stand up for myself and to follow my more impossible dreams and goals.

Nina Simone on what it feels to be free:

Then there are other mermaid peeps (cough cough me) who really need the help of the mermaids to CALM. THE FUCK. DOWN. Mermaids who are so caught up in the human game of doing and proving they need some slowed down-flowed out mermaid medicine to bring them back. To let go to the flow, the trust and the non-attachment of the mermaids, and stop acting like little humans freaking out in a maze. To stop frenetically trying to do and prove and create and settle into the flow of I Am.

Oh my god this is so much my mermaid medicine at present. So needed. So hard to process. It’s what all my spiritual practice is about at the moment.

If mermaids were putting out an energy signature into the world, it would be Being. They would just Be. There is nothing to prove. How do they get what they want? By Being it. By stepping into it. Mermaids don’t hustle, or panic about human stuff. They Know about the Flow. They ain’t pushers. They are Be-ers.

I guess it’s the old feminine stuff about receiving. You can’t receive anything if you are spending all your time frantically doing stuff and giving stuff out. You gotta make empty space for it. You gotta be brave enough to set the hustle aside and say “hey, I don’t need to push so hard,” and leave some space for something else.

Because without space, nothing can get in, cos all the space is filled up. Calm can’t get in, as it’s all filled up with worry. Goddess and the Mermaids can’t get in cos there is no space for them.

Mermaids are not one trick ponies (or unicorns..?). They are fluid, intuitive shapeshifter and give you whatever it is you need to become a powerful Mermaid Being, whatever is missing in your Sovereign arsenal.

So what I need from mermaids right now (floooooooow) might not be what you need and get from mermaids (Playfulness. Innocence. Pride. Shamelessness. Wharves.) You get what it is you need, and what they think you can handle.

Perhaps you need to embrace your contradictory nature.

Maybe it’s learning to honour your hurt feeling in front of your friends.

Whatever it is on the path to being whole, to loving yourself, to being powerful and strong, that’s what mermaids want to help you with.

The more I work with them, the more I realise they are all about female empowerment. That’s their gig. That’s what they are here for.

They want to liberate women-kind and unleash an army of mermaid queens on the world.

Imagine a world full of badass Mermaid Queens, standing fully in their power, changing the world. How magical would that be?
