The magical arts are often forgotten on the path of the priestess.

For folks entering the devotional world of the goddess through the new age or a desire to commune with the goddess there can to be a fear or aversion of magic, spells and witchery.

(And I am not talking about those of us funneled into the priestess path through witchcraft and wicca – we are very cool with magic as a whole.) 

But WHY?

Why shouldn’t priestesses cast spells? 

Why priestesses are afraid of magic.. 

It’s easy to still carry the fear and self-distrust of magic and power that the mainstream religions instilled in us. 

Sometimes folk think magic is the opposite of devotion – it’s about what YOU want, rather than what GOD wants. Magic is intrinsically selfish and the true path of the devotee is supposed to be self-less.  

Some believe that true devotion to the Goddess would be radical acceptance of what she gives us – and not asking for anything different. If the goddess wants us to have something, she will provide it for us, and us whining for stuff or to improve our material reality is proof that we are un-evolved, because we shouldn’t care about that stuff. 

Some believe that wanting material things is shallow and not spiritual, and that using spiritual power in order to influence the world around you is a gross misuse of power. 

But here is the thing:

  • Is selflessness the true goal of spirituality? Maybe for folks like the Buddha, who grew up a prince waited on hand and foot and needed to expand out of his conditioned me-me-me upbringing to find enlightenment. But I’m never convinced that selflessness is a worthy goal for a huge portion of the population (I’m talking folks who grew up as girls) who have been culturally conditioned to put themselves last, disregard their needs, and subsume their selfhood into others. For a lot of women and women-born folk, the spiritual path is about establishing a clear defined and healthy sense of self, rather than eroding it away.
  • Is denial of our material reality really the way to go for spiritual development? It seems more like a legacy of the old christian religion, where we were irredeemable creatures sinning away in a world devoid of divinity. In a religious paradigm where this material world is soul-less and has no sacredness, maybe it makes sense to reject reality… but not when we believe that the world is alive with the breath of the goddess. Then our physical experience, our needs, our desires, our delights – then they become sacred and important and holy.
  • And anyway – isn’t free will kind of the point? Why would we be given free will if there was only one correct option – to ignore it? What kind of psychopathic divine being would do that – make all of life a test to see if you pass? A huge part of the deal of being human is that we have to make choices – how to act, what to do, what to eat – and we can’t delegate all of that to Goddess. It’s just not practical, sensible or needed. How does it make sense that we are born with desires and needs and we are not supposed to act on them? 
  • When anyone says that they wouldn’t practice magic because it’s dangerous or it’s a misuse of power, what they are actually saying is that power is evil and they don’t trust themselves – and I get it. Our twisted modern model for power is all about domination, oppression and fear – it’s horrible, and very importantly it’s a distortion. It’s not a true representation of what power can be, we just have the worst possible example of it all around us right now.  

I believe that a central tenet of the priestess path is that Goddess is imminent – that means she is everywhere, everything, all around us, all the time. She is this material world, and the ones beyond it… and she is us.

We literally are the goddess incarnate on earth. 

(And, so is everything else – humans are not that special!) 

We can be aware that we are divine beings embodied and consciously make decisions from our incarnate-goddess vibes, or we can forget what we are and just happily be pulled along on the eddies and flows of the dream of reality. (It’s a legit choice – you can totally do this. Most people do!)   

In my worldview, magic is just us consciously realising and working our core Goddess connection. Call it spellcraft, creative visualisation, manifestation… it’s all the same thing. 

On the path of the priestess, our power and our choices are so important. 

Not only is magic simply energetic action in alignment with our desires – like every other action we make (buying cheese to make sandwiches, applying for a job, walking to the shops etc), only this time it’s energetic not physical action….

… but as a priestess it’s what we are supposed to be doing. We are meant to be creatures between two worlds, skilled in the art of energetic alignment and intention (which is magic, btw). 

Priestesses train to be masters of magic, because part of our work other than devotion is training to be masters of energy – to have those skills of the otherworld. 

So every priestess has to learn the skills of the Enchantress at some point on their journey. 

To look themselves in the eyes and ask “… what is it that I desire?”

And to dare to choose it, create it, manifest it, make it happen – to receive it. 

To exercise their divine power and participate in this wild weaving of reality. 

It’s not selfish – and anyway, our goal isn’t to be self-less. It’s to merge our self with the divine self, to honour our humanity and our divinity, to love all of it.

We don’t want to be self-less – we want to be love. 

That’s VERY different.
