So my new Mermaid Tarot Portraits.

Empress tarot card art portraitI’ve always loved drawing mermaids, and I like having a purpose and a reason to my art – to illustrate a story, celebrate a Goddess, or paint a picture to make someone happy.

I was hit by this notion to create an oracle deck – which I am slowly working on! – and was researching away about how I would do it and how much work it would take, slowly starting the preliminary drawings and meanings of the cards. It’s a mother-lovin’ huge project.

I was asked to do a guestpost by my friend Kris Oster about mermaids. I suddenly really wanted to create tarot-like images of people as mermaids, like what I had been working on in my oracle deck plans, but without all the complicated bits. So I did it. I wanted a little picture you could hold in your hand full of meaning, like a Mermaid Tarot Card.

Kris was the first. I wanted to draw her as she is such an inspiring mermaid ninja badass. She was the Lover, as she is all Yemaya-Oshun-Abundant-Gloriousness.

I shared it with a few people, and I’ve been pretty absent for the last couple of weeks as I have been flat out creating commissions for peeps. It’s been crazy.

The thing I love most about art is the draughtsmanship. I love drawing. I love clean lines and I LOVE gold ink. I wanted to create a kind of mermaid portrait (as I have done a whole bunch of them in different styles before) that was all about what I enjoyed doing. Namely, drawing and putting gold on stuff, and not having to bother with that pesky painting bit.

The concept behind them is that you choose a Major Arcana tarot card to represent yourself and pop me a couple of pictures of you. Then I draw you as a mermaid tarot card – the Mermaid Empress, or the mermaid version of the Star Card, or the World, or whichever you fancy really.

mermaid portrait tarot cards front and back! Some cards have a gold Sun-energy vibe, so I put Gold on them. Some have a silver Moon energy vibe, so I put Silver on them.

At the moment, they are on special offer until Samhain, or until my quota of 20 portraits is all filled up. I’m raising money to go to Thailand to get certified as a scuba diver and a free diver to help my mermaid work, and also to celebrate 5 years of awesomeness with Superman.

They are just £20 ($33) plus postage at the moment – so if you fancy one, get over to the Mermaid Tarot Art Portraits page and order one right now. After Samhain, or after the first 20 cards are bought, they are doubling to at least £40. You can order one by clicking right here to go to the art page.

For every portrait ordered, £1 goes to the Hebridean Dolphin and Whale Trust, a little charity making a difference in the seas off the west coast of Scotland. Mermaids gotta look after their ocean home. Yay!
