Today’s art is a Tarot Card! Please welcome the High Priestess.
This one isn’t really a portrait: it’s an aborted portrait draft I did, but I liked it so much I finished it any way. It’s really Rider-Waite-ish: it even has the pillars and the initials for Boaz and Jachin on it.
She sits on a rock in the sea, meditating and centred in her own power with her hands together in the Anjali Mudhra – that’s prayer position – which is the mudhra for respect and greeting. it’s like we’ve just swum out to this mermaid priestess to ask her advice and she says, quietly, reverently, Hello, I see you, what do you seek?
She’s totally blinged out in silvery moonlit jewels, and wears a beautiful moon crown on her head and a veil. I know I say this about every card I do, but this is one of my favourites!
In fact, I love this one so much I am inspired to get off my ass and create a full mermaid tarot deck, featuring her in the position of High Priestess! Yessss! So feel free to remind me that I said this, because huge projects like this freak me out.
I will say, the more I make these cards, the less thrilling the drawing of the scales on the tail becomes. It takes AGES man.
This card is going up for sale in the Shop today! Which means if you love her, you can buy her and have her in your house for £80 inc. postage. I’ll be so sad to see her go, but she needs to be freeee! Not stuck in a folder full of mermaid drawings under my desk. I plan to turn her into a greetings card or a post card as well, because more High Priestess please.
