One of the ways Morgan le Fay shows up is as the archetypal witch.

She casts spells and curses, is shrouded in a cloak of raven feathers and has an air of power and mystery around her… perhaps a little danger too?

Morgan’s portrayal as a sorceress hasn’t always been the most flattering – but then for hundreds of years, any woman with magical power (or even regular power, being frank) was demonised. Witches were devil worshippers, in league with those awful faeries who stole babies and sabotaged harvests.

Of course, nowadays we know better – we are all smart enough to see the villainisation of the witch, and many of us are actively reclaiming that archetype today.

But Morgan as a Witch

She’s not a only-pure-light-and-angelic-healing kinda witch.

She’s not a white witch, castrated of anything shocking and challenging until she is benign and harmless to all.

She hasn’t been cracked and moulded into whatever form is most pleasing to (and least inconvenient to) others.

I feel like the wobble with the Witch is that she IS a challenge – she is herself and she is not there to make others feel more comfortable about themselves… which for women is something we have been socialised to do since a young age.

Morgana is a FULL SPECTRUM witch.

That means she casts actual practical magic to affect the material world – she isn’t afraid of her desires or her physicality, and she isn’t afraid to cast her magic to plump her bank balance or manifest a free holiday or keep her lover interested.

She casts spells for more intangible things too – for peace, to release bad fortune or stuck feelings, to amplify dreams and psychic powers – for whatever she is needing or desiring in her life.

And yes – she chooses her own morals

This is where witchery gets uncomfortable

Morgan is the goddess of witches so she makes her own rules, choosing for herself if a curse is within her moral code, or a manipulative love spell, or a banishment spell for a bad boss.

THIS IS WHY MORGAN THE WITCH IS A BIT SCARY.

‘Cos she isn’t here to make you comfortable.

It’s us facing what full power and self acceptance looks like, and Morgana is our mirror…

… and when a goddess who can spellcraft her desires into existence, who can curse or bless as she feels, and who isn’t going to reign in her power or influence over her world to suit anyone else makes us uncomfortable….

… what could that mirror be saying to us?

… what could that mirror be saying ABOUT us?

HOW INTERESTING! Remember whatever you see in the mirror isn’t good or bad, it’s just very, very interesting.

Do you feel a resonance with Morgana the Witch?
