aRT ON FRIDAYS morganToday’s artwork is a slow burner. I love to draw Morgan le Fey, and last year I had the idea to create an oracle card deck for the Avalonian Tradition, as there isn’t really one that I like out there. I thought it would be fab to have an oracle card deck that had all my favourite Celtic and Avalonian goddesses in it, that since I know their stories and have personal experience with each of them it would lead to super clear readings. Yay!

MORGAN LE FEY ARTWORK
Not watercolour paper – see how it buckles and curls? Time for crayons!

But as with all huge projects, it scared the bejeesus out of me. I drew one card up and procrastinated for five months before doing anything about it. I’m such a horrible perfectionist, I didn’t want to start painting it or colouring it in just in case I messed it
up. And I wasn’t sure which medium to use. Watercolour? Pencils? Acrylics? A combo? What if this isn’t even the way I want Morgan to appear in the oracle deck? Argh!

I had some time off last month due to hand injuries – my wrist RSI had become troublesome, and when it’s having sad times all I can do is rest it and avoid all computer work and writing – so I thought, what the hell, it’s just sitting in my art box and I can always draw it again. I started with watercolour (you can see it in the hair and a little bit in the dress) but it’s not really the right paper for it. So I tried a little watercolour pencil (the dress) but I’m not very good at it and decided to mainly stick with colouring pencil.

MORGAN LE FEY ARTWORK
Morgan le Fey close up! She’s going to either have a Vescia Pisces or a Apple Pentagram on her heart. Haven’t decided yet.

I use old Spectracolor and newer Prismacolor colouring pencils: they are thick and creamy and blend like ninjas. You can get a really soft, waxy finish with them, they are just the bestest. Everyone try Prismacolors! Then I put some silver over the top of it, for embellishment, as I like putting gold and silver in everything and Morgen is a silver lady.

It’s not finished. I put my purple crayon somewhere smart so I can’t find it to finish off the left corner where the pussy cat is, needs more silver and there are a bunch of apple pentagrams that still need to be popped on there. It still needs a little polishing, but it’s half there!
