And the shadows that this path WILL bring up in you to heal…

I’m just back from a week in Glastonbury, reflecting on what it is and what it is not to walk the path of a Priestess of Avalon.

Avalon is the mystical sacred isle of ancient Celtic memory, and the Priestesses of Avalon are the ones who serve on the isle – those who walk in devotion to and embody the love, wisdom and magic that the Celtic Otherworld pours from the cauldron of the Goddess. It’s a holy island that is ruled by the way of the Goddess.

Getting judgey for a moment, more and more I see a split between those who are really embodying the path of Avalon and those who don’t.

😮

Like many rebirthed myths, the concept of the Priestesses of Avalon holds a particular kind of glamour. It’s the shimmer of a dream where we can finally have the sisterhood we want and feel the belonging we have craved our whole lives.

However simply walking the path of the Goddess and of Avalon doesn’t mean that sisterhood just magically happens and everything is perfect.

We can’t forget the damage of the last few thousand years. The systematic erosion of trust and safety in groups of other women and of other men has really done a number on us and created all sorts of armouring, woundings and toxic behaviours.

When we arrive on the metaphorical Isle of Avalon we are all carrying toxic patterns and sisterhood woundings – all of us. Just discovering Avalon doesn’t wash them clean.

But what often happens is that we can’t imagine that we, the people who most believe in sisterhood and community and have dreamed of this since we were little kids, could ever be the perpetrators of sister or community wounding or violence.

Moi? The champion of the goddess as the problem? NEVER!

Ha! This is one of the big challenges on the goddess path – our ego likes to pretend we are all spiritual and wonderful, and so it stops us seeing the very woundings and patterns that will open up our hearts to true connection and vulnerability – the thing that freaks out our ego the most.

Part of the specific call of Avalon is to confront and heal ourselves of these woundings, otherings and the ways we close our heart to others. This is the work of my Morgan Mystery School, where we choose compassion and peer into the mirror of the goddess and hold our shadows close, and the work of my upcoming collaboration the Lady of the Lake Alchemy Training (sssshhh it’s a secret!).

We step on this journey BECAUSE our soul is calling us to do this work. To heal this particular wound. To unite with love and step through into something new.

When you aren’t doing this work, you aren’t embodying Avalon. When you are locked in games of hierarchy, control and competition, when you are living through the lens of not-enough that you project it on everyone you know, you can’t be embodying Avalon.

There is no hierarchy in Avalon as I see it. There is only community and collaboration – Team!

There is no competition, because as the isle of abundance where everything grows freely, Avalon teaches us that there really is enough space for us all to shine.

There is glamour and beauty, of course! But the truth of the path is an groundedness, a soft misty devotion, a realness that honours and sits on the soft damp earth with those who cry and experience life and who maybe just need a minute to breathe.

It’s the beauty of the Goddess that radiates through cobwebs and smiles and open hearts that is the true energy of Avalon, not the empty shine of a superior “priestess” identity cloaked in gossamer glamour.

We are not ascending out of life. To reach Avalon, we have to dive deeper into the earth to reach the Goddess.

And there is no one perfect way to reach it. No one has monopoly on Avalon – there is no one correct path to get there, just as there is no one correct genre of music or art or beauty. Like the shapeshifting Faery Queens and Goddesses who rule these inner otherworld lands, the way to Avalon takes many different faces!

You follow the face that lights you up, that feels like a mirror to your devotion. For some peeps, that’s my path – the way I see and perceive and speak about Avalon is your mirror.

For others, the work of Jhenah Teylndru and the SOA nails it, or the work of Holly and the Awakening Avalon temple, or the work of Dion Fortune, or even the path of the Glastonbury Goddess Temple…

… and that is so perfect. We are all on the same team – team Avalon – and we all provide slightly different perspectives or experiences of the same thing.

And that is exactly how it should be.
